DU VC on attack on residence: They planned to kill me
Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman has claimed that the attack made on his residence during angry protests against the existing quota system in public service was planned with the aim to kill him. He made the remarks while briefing reporters at his office on Monday. The vice chancellor also claimed that the attackers are not Dhaka University students but outsiders. Masked attackers were trained and they came to kill me," he said, adding that their aim was to destabilize the situation. According to the Bangla Tribune, he said: “I had spoken to the government about the student demands and the authorities assured me that they will be looking into the matter closely. When I was on my way to inform the students about this, my family and I were attacked by unknown assailants with metal rods. “If I had not been protected by those around me, I would have died today,” he added. Recounting the widespread vandalism in the DU area, he said: “They destroyed the CCTV cameras of the VC residential building and stole the hard disk to remove all evidence of the attack. They have ransacked the whole area.”

He said: “The government will be directly involved in handling this incident as the VC premises are the government's property. The government is responsible to take legal action regarding this attack. “Around 1am, about 2000 demonstrators entered the DU VC residential premises. They broke down the main gate and entered the house. They were armed with hockey and bamboo sticks. We hid behind the house out of fear,” he added. Debdas Bhattacharya, additional commissioner of the Detective Branch said a case will be filed against destruction of property soon. A group of protesters demanding reforms in the quota system in public service broke the main entrance of the VC's residence and ransacked several rooms and furniture early Monday. The protesters also set fire to two vehicles parked inside the VC residence. Sections of this article were first published on banglatribune.com
