A gazette on the quota system in government services will be issued after receiving Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's instruction in this regard, Public Administration Ministry's Senior Secretary Mozammel Haque Khan has said.
"There is nothing to hurry. No recruitment process will begin immediately," he told reporters at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Thursday.
Asked whether the system would be reformed or repealed, the senior secretary said it would be known later as the decision would be taken following the prime minister’s order.
Replying to another question, Mozammel said they were now waiting for her directive.
"People are coming up with different opinions and speculations and creating confusion. This is not an easy task, rather complicated to some extent. However, everything will be clear after getting the prime minister’s orders."
Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam said a committee would be formed to scrutinize the quota system.
The next step would be taken according to the recommendations of the committee, he said.
Addressing parliament on Wednesday, Prime Minister Hasina announced that the quota system in government jobs would be scraped as the students were protesting it so much.
Since mid February, students of different colleges and universities – both public and private – and jobseekers had been demonstrating across the country demanding a reformation to the system, claiming it excluded a large number of qualified candidates.
The current system reserves 56% government jobs for some selected groups, depriving many deserving candidates from entering the public service sector and universities.
At present, 30% seats are reserved for the descendants of the 1971 freedom fighters. There is also 10% district quota. Another 10% is reserved for women and 5% for the ethnic minorities.
If the 55% quota is not filled, 1% goes to the physically challenged.
However, these government posts remain vacant if candidates from these selected groups fail in the recruitment tests.
