Gazipur, Khulna city polls: Election Commission rejects BNP’s demand for army deployment
The Election Commission (EC) has rejected the BNP’s demand for deployment of troops during the upcoming city corporation polls of Gazipur (GCC) and Khulna (KCC). The commission is also adamant about conducting a trial run of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in both city elections. A six-member BNP delegation led by Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain submitted proposals for the municipal elections during a meeting with election commissioners on Tuesday. While briefing reporters after the meeting, Election Commission’s Acting Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said that the commission has agreed to consider some of the proposals submitted by BNP, if they are in line with existing rules and regulations.

He, however, did not mention which proposals the commission will consider. “The EC has no plans to deploy the army during the upcoming local government polls,” he said. “BNP also objected to the use of EVM in elections. The commission replied that the use of technology in accordance with rules and regulations is permitted. “The commission assured the BNP that the EVM is a modern technology, and it is quite difficult to hack. The BNP was also invited by the commission to check out the EVM system.” Commenting on BNP’s demand to withdraw Gazipur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Harun Ur Rashid, the acting secretary said: “They [the BNP] spoke about withdrawing a number of officials from the administration, including the Gazipur SP. “The commission had made no comments on those proposals.” Helaluddin added that the commission formed a coordination committee for the GCC polls following existing laws and regulations. The BNP delegation, led by Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, also discussed the upcoming local government and general polls with the CEC.
