Tarique Rahman submitted his passport to the UK home office as part of the asylum seeking process, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said.
“He is a proud Bangladeshi citizen by birth,” Fakhrul told a media briefing on Tuesday in Dhaka, dubbing State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam’s comments on Tarique’s citizenship preposterous.
The UK issued him travel permit after receiving his passport according to the country’s law, the BNP leader added.
“He currently does not need the Bangladeshi passport,” Fakhrul said. “When he is well enough to return, he will apply for a passport and get it like other citizens of the country.”
Recently, Shahriar had claimed that Tarique had willingly submitted his passport forsaking his Bangladeshi nationality.
