Quota demonstrators to enforce 2hr strike at colleges, universities Sunday

In the face of continued demonstrations, the prime minister on April 11 had announced that the government would take measures to scrap the quota system

Demonstrators rallying for quota reforms will observe a two hour strike on Sunday, as the government failed to publish a gazette abolishing the controversial quota system in public services.

The strike will be observed from 11am to 1pm at all public university and colleges. They will also hold protest rallies at different campuses.

Bangladesh General Students Rights Protection Alliance convener Hasan Al Mamun declared the program at a press briefing held in front of Dhaka University Central Library Saturday morning.

Earlier on Wednesday, the platform issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government for publishing the gazette.

Hasan alleged that miscreants, members of law enforcement agencies, and authorities of different universities frequently harass their fellow activists and their family members.

He said they will wage tougher movements if the harassment continues.

Hasan said: “Although 31 days have passed since the prime minister’s announcement, no progress has been made in terms of publishing the gazette, which is causing frustration among the students.”

Nurul Haque Nur, another joint convener of the platform, said: “We would not accept any further drama regarding quota reform as there is no space for hesitation after the premier‘s clear cut announcement regarding the system.”

In the face of continued demonstrations, the prime minister on April 11 had announced that the government would take measures to scrap the quota system.

On April 26, the protesters had warned that they would resume the protest if a gazette notification was not published in April. Later, they gave the government time till May 7.

On April 8, thousands of students demonstrated in Shahbagh and Dhaka University areas to protest the current 56% quota reserved for selected groups for government jobs.

Over 50 students were injured in violent clashes between the police, Bangladesh Chhatra League activists, and the demonstrators. Later, universities all across Bangladesh expressed solidarity by participating in the movement.

On that night, during clashes in Shahbagh and Dhaka University areas, a group of people attacked and vandalized the university vice-chancellor’s residence.

The prime minister eventually announced the quota system would be scrapped.

At least five cases were later filed against unnamed persons at Shahbagh and Ramna police stations over the violence and attack on the vice-chancellor’s residence.

The demonstrators also demanded withdrawal of cases filed against unnamed people over the violence and vandalism during the movement at the Dhaka University campus.
