War on drugs: 10 killed in 10 districts

Around 80 people have been killed in reported 'gunfights' as of yet

At least 10 suspected drug traders have been killed in separate incidents of “gunfights” in 10 districts.  

The “gunfights” took place on Sunday. 

Around 80 people have been killed reported gunfights across Bangladesh since law enforcers launched their latest crackdown on drug traders two weeks back. 

In Bagerhat, a suspected drug trader named Mitun Biswas, 45, was killed in an alleged gunfight with police at Chitalmari upazila. 

Chitalmari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anukul Biswas said they arrested Mitun Saturday night. 

Based on his information, police took Mitun and went to his house to recover drugs in the early hours of the day. 

On their way, Mitun’s associates opened fire on police, forcing the law enforcers to fire back, which triggered a gunfight, the OC said. 

At one stage, police found Mitun’s body on the spot while the others managed to flee the scene. 

Police also recovered one firearm, two rounds of bullets, a knife, 2kg cannabis, and 100 pieces of yaba pills from the spot.

In Meherpur, suspected drug dealer, Hafizul Islam Hafi, 45, was killed in a “gunfight” with police at Gangni, Gangni police station OC Harendra Nath Sarkar said. 

Police recovered a firearm, and 112 bottles of phensidyl from the spot. 

Hafi was accused in a number of drug peddling cases, the OC said. 

In Jhenaidah, 35-year-old suspected drug trader Rafikul Islam alias Gaza Liton was killed in a “gunfight” with his associates at Shoilkupa. 

Shoilkupa police station OC Alamgir Hossain said: “Upon hearing about it, we went to the spot and recovered the body.” 

Rafik was accused in 12 cases, he said, adding that they recovered one shotgun, five rounds of bullets, 10 bottles of phensidyl, and 400 yaba tablets from the spot. 

In Kushtia, a suspected drug trader was killed in a “gunfight” with police at Block D ground. 

The deceased was identified as Halim Mondol, 35. 

Kushtia model police station OC Nasir Uddin said they conducted a drive at the ground following a tip-off that the traders were gathering there to trade drugs. 

Sensing police presence, the criminals opened fire on them.  The law enforcers fired back in retaliation, he said. 

Halim was fatally injured in the incident. Later, he was pronounced dead at Kushtia General Hospital. 

Halim was a listed drug trader of the district. 

Four policemen were also injured in the shootout, OC Nasir said. 

Police recovered two firearms, three rounds of bullets, and 800 yaba tablets from the spot. 

In Thakurgaon, suspected drug trader Rafikul Islam Taleban, 55, was killed in a “gunfight” with police at Ranishankoil upazila. 

Confirming the matter, Superintendent of Police Farhat Ahmed said Rafik was accused in more than 20 drug related cases. 

In Khulna, suspected drug dealer Abul Kalam, 40, was killed in an alleged gunfight with police at Dighalia upazila. 

Anisur Rahman, additional superintendent of police, confirmed the matter. 

He said there are five cases against Kalam. 

In Mymensingh, an unidentified drug trader was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Keuatkhali Morakhola area. 

District Detective Branch of police OC Ashikur Rahman said two police constables were also injured during the incident. 

Police recovered 100gm heroin, 100 yaba pills, and two machetes from the spot. 

In Noakhali, suspected drug trader Md Hasan, 35, was killed in a “gunfight” with police at Sonaimuri. 

Sonaimuri police station OC Nazim Uddin said three police constables were also injured in the incident. 

Police recovered one locally made gun, seven rounds of bullets, one machete and 120 yaba pills from the spot.  

Hasan was a yaba trader, the OC said adding that he was accused in 21 cases.

In Chandpur, suspected drug trader Selim, 37, was killed in a “gunfight” with police at Matlab upazila. 

Matlab (south) police station OC Md Kutubuddin said they arrested Selim during a drive. 

As they were taking him to the police station, Selim’s associates opened fire on the police, forcing the law enforcers to fire back that triggered a “gunfight.”

Selim was declared dead when taken to Matlab Health Complex. 

Four policemen were also injured during the shootout, the OC said. 

Police recovered four rounds of bullets, six rounds of cartridges, 110 yaba tablets and two locally made guns from the spot. 

In Cox’s Bazar, a councillor of Teknaf municipality was killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) during an anti-drug drive in Mithapani area.

Deceased Md Ekramul Haque was a listed yaba trader and councillor of Teknaf Municipality Ward 3. 

RAB 7 Cox’s Bazar Company Commander Major Md Ruhul Amin said: “A group of drug traders opened fire at a team of RAB when they went to the area to conduct a drive around 1am on Sunday.”

In retaliation, the elite force members fired back, which triggered a “gunfight.”

Later, RAB recovered Ekramul’s body from the spot. 

Two firearms and 10,000 pieces of yaba tablets were also recovered from the spot, Major Ruhul said.

Confirming the matter, Teknaf police station OC Ronjit Kumar Barua said: “RAB has handed over the body to us. We will send the body to Cox’s Bazar Sadar morgue for autopsy.

“Ekramul was listed as a drug trader in the list of the Home Ministry.”
