So far, over 90 people have been killed in alleged gunfights

At least 12 suspected drug dealers have been killed in alleged gunfights in nine districts.

Of them, two each were killed in Cumilla, Satkhira and Pirojpur, and one each in Dhaka, Natore, Pabna, Munshiganj, Jhenaidah, and Chandpur on Monday.

Over 90 alleged drug peddlers have been killed across Bangladesh since law enforcement agencies launched an aggressive countrywide anti-narcotics drive in early May.

In Dhaka, a suspected drug trader, Nazrul Islam alias Nozu Sarder, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with detectives at Mirpur’s Chalantika slum area in the early hours of Monday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman said Nozu was accused in 22 cases.

Weapons and yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

In Cumilla, two suspected drug traders – Enamul Haque Bhuiyan alias Dolon, 35, and Md Nuru, 55 – were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ in Debidwar and SadarDakhshinupazilas early in the morning.

Dolon was accused in 12 drug-peddling cases, Debidwar police OC Md Mizanur Rahman said, adding that four policemen were also injured during the skirmish.

Md Nuru was accused in 12 drug peddling and arms cases, said Sadar Dakhshin police station OC Nazrul Islam.

Police recovered 5kg cannabis and a pistol from the spot.

In Natore, suspected drug dealer Abdul Khalek, 36, was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Baghnagarkandi in Singra upazila around 1:25am.

One pistol, bullets, and 853 yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

Two RAB members were injured in the gunfight, RAB 5 commander Major Shibli Mostofa said.

In Pabna, a suspected drug trader, Ijjot Ali Pramanik, 28, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Beraupazila’s municipality area around 1am.

Pabna police chief Ziahdul Kabir said Ijjot was accused in 14 cases.

Police recovered some drugs, a gun and some bullets from the spot.

In Chandpur, suspected drug dealer Abu Sayeed Badsha alias Lal Badsha, 45, was killed in a reported gunfight with the police at Faridganj upazila’s Boichatori area around 1:30am.

Faridganj police OC Shah Alam said Badsha was accused in 10 drug cases.

Police recovered 111 yaba pills, a gun, bullets, and three handmade bombs from the site.

In Satkhira, police recovered the bullet-riddled bodies of two suspected drug traders from Sadar upazila’s Bakal area around 7am.

The deceased were identified as Khalilur Rahman, 50, and Emdad Hossain, 48.

Sadar police’s Sub-Inspector Prabir Kumar Das said a gun and 105 bottles of phensidyl were also recovered.

He said the two men might have died during a clash between two rival groups of drug peddlers.

In Munshiganj, suspected drug dealer Sumon Biswas, 36, was killed in a reported gunfight between two groups of drug dealers at Mirkadim municipality around 2am.

Sadar police station OC Gazi Salahuddin said Sumon was accused in 20-25 cases, including drug peddling.

Police recovered a locally made weapon and a number of yaba pills from the site.

In Jhenaidah, an alleged unidentified drug peddler was shot dead in a reported gunfight between two groups of drug dealers at Jargram area of the Sadar upazila around 1:30pm.

Sadar police OC Emdadul Haque Sheikh said a patrol team, on information, had recovered the bullet-hit body.

They also recovered a foreign pistol, 20 bottles of phensidyl, and some cannabis.

In Pirojpur, a reported gunfight with police at Kourikhara village of Sadar upazila around 2am left suspected drug trader Wahiduzzaman Ohid, 50, from Nesarabad upazila, dead, UNB reports.

Additional Superintendent of Police GM Abul Kalam Azad said one pipe gun, 175 yaba tablets, 50g marijuana and four cartridges were recovered from the spot.

Besides, Mizanur Rahman, 35, an accused in six cases, was killed in another ‘gunfight’ with police at Mathbaria upazila around 1:30am.

Police recovered 2kg marijuana, 50 yaba tablets and four sharp weapons from the spot, said Mostafa Swapan, additional superintendent of police Mathbaria circle.

Three policemen were also injured in the incident.
