'People are happy with the anti-drug drive and the death of Ekramul did not make it questionable at all'

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said one or two mistakes may occur during the ongoing anti-narcotics drive.

"It's a huge operation, one or two mistake can occur during this drive," he said on Saturday, while talking to reporters about the alleged killing of Teknaf Municipality Councillor Ekramul Haque in a so-called gunfight during the law enforcement agencies' ongoing anti-drug drive.

If it is proved that Ekramul fell victim to the anti-narcotics drive by law enforcement agencies, then “proper measures” will be taken by the government, he added.

The minister was inaugurating a special bus service for women, dubbed as Dolonchapa, at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka.

"People are happy with the anti-drug drive and the death of Ekramul did not make it questionable at all,” claimed Obaidul, also general secretary of the ruling Awami League.

"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina suggested we be careful about the harassment of innocent people during this drive," he said.

"Ekramul was a member of Awami League. Law enforcement agencies would not remain out of the purview of investigation and punishment."

Rangs in collaboration with Eicher launched the special bus service for women.

In the first phase, 10 buses will be launched on the Mirpur 12-Motijheel route, and 60 buses on the ECB Chattar-Azimpurc route.

The vehicles will be operated by women.

Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Samity Secretary General Khandakar Enayet Ullah and Rangs Group Chairman Abdur Rouf Chowdhury also addressed the program.
