Leaders and members of Awami League’s various wings joined the election campaigning, with Jatiya Party and other parties close to the ruling party also rallying for Jahangir’s campaign

Awami League’s Gazipur City Corporation candidate, Jahangir Alam, says BNP proved that they condone murder and violent politics by nominating the brother of Ahsan Ullah Master’s killer.

The politician was speaking at a rally in the Shimultoli area of Gazipur on Thursday morning.

“Despite winning five times, BNP has done no development to the area – they have only improved their own coffers. The roads are narrow and they lack drains and footpaths. I promise that if I am elected, I will improve the infrastructure and make sure land and shops are allotted to the poor and destitute with the help of the prime minister. All I need is your votes,” Jahangir said.

He later held similar rallies in various other areas of Gazipur.

Jahangir also said: “Gazipur is right next to the capital. If elected, I will put special emphasis on the development of Gazipur. Please vote for boat in the election.”

Leaders and members of Awami League’s various wings joined the election campaigning, with Jatiya Party and other parties close to the ruling party also rallying for Jahangir’s campaign.

Former member of parliament (MP), Kazi Mozammel Haque, Freedom Fighter Fazlul Haque, and Matiur Rahman Mati were among those who spoke at the event. The speakers stressed that the public would reject the BNP who sympathize with a family of murderers. They also said the BNP candidate had occupied shops owned by poor people and ousted Hindus from their homes to seize their land.  They urged the public to help Awami League candidate Jahangir Alam achieve victory.

Ahsan Ullah Master, a popular Gazipur politician and Awami League MP, was shot and killed on May 7, 2004, when addressing a conference near Tongi. The attack also left a young man named Faruq Ratan dead, and 17 others wounded.

On April 16, 2005, the Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down death penalties to 22 people including the main accused, BNP leader Nurul Islam Sarkar – Hasan Uddin Sarkar’s brother. Six others were also given life imprisonment.
