Seventy four teachers, advocates, writers, artists, and human rights activists on Wednesday condemned the several attacks and harassment on the teachers of Dhaka University (DU) and Chittagong University (CU), who protested the attacks on the students demanding quota reform.
Teachers and activists also wanted the teachers of universities to stop being harassed and demanded freedom of expression and thoughts in society. They issued the joint statement initiated by National Committee against Fascism and Imperialism.
In the statement they condemned the recent attack on the DU teachers including Akmal Hossain, Tanjimuddin Khan and Fahmidul Huq as well as the teachers of CU - Maidul Islam and Ali Ar Razi.
“We strongly condemn the student organization and the authorities of the two universities involved in such undemocratic and fascist attitudes,” they said in the statement.
They also alleged that, the authorities are intentionally using a part of one of Professor Akmal Hossain’s recent speech to legitimize the attack on quota reform movement.
They demanded all repression against the protesting teachers and students be stopped, stop lying about Professor Akmal Hossain, withdraw cases against CU teachers Maidul Islam and Ali Ar Razi and ensure their professional and physical security as well as to stop the administrative “investigation” of them.
The statement signatories include, among others - Swapan Adnan, former professor of DU and CU, Professor C R Abrar of DU’s International Relations, Professor Anu Muhammad of Jahangirnagar University, Rehnuma Ahmed, former professor of Jahangirnagar University, and Meghna Guhathakurta, a former DU professor.
