Bangladesh has a total stock of 11.18 million cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep ‘ready for Eid slaughtering' this year, a slight up from the previous year.

Preparations have already been taken, including the sacrificial animal stock, to supply healthy goats, sheep, buffaloes and cattle in markets during Eid-ul-Adha.

The government authorities have taken steps to implement a contingency plan ensuring foolproof security of cattle markets.

This was disclosed on Tuesday at an inter-ministerial meeting held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, chaired by state minister Ashraf Ali Khan.

4.58 million cows and buffaloes, 7.20 million goats and sheep, and a large number of other sacrificial animals to be slaughtered are also available this year, department of livestock services (DLS) confirmed the figure at the meeting, as quoted by a press release from the ministry on Monday.

Officials at the meeting said Bangladesh has attained self-sufficiency in meat production that has significantly reduced cattle imports and entry of sacrificial animals from neighbouring India and Myanmar.

Earlier, the number of illegal entry of Indian cows was 2.4 to 2.5 million annually, however, only 92,000 cows had entered to Bangladesh in 2018.

There will be two veterinary teams available for each at all 24 cattle-markets in and around the capital to be arranged for this year. Of them 14 are expected to be under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 10 under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Departments concerned will also work with the livestock department and city corporations to prevent cow fattening using steroid and hormone injections in an effort  to encourage a healthy fattening process.

The ministry will seek support from the Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations to ensure that the animals are slaughtered at designated places and that the waste is disposed of properly.
