From now on, the first six months of Bangla year will have 31 days, and the last six months of the year will have a length of 30 days, except for the month Falgun

For the first time, the Bangla month of Ashshin has been completed in 31 days this year as the Bangla calendar has been revised.

Mohammad Anwar Hossain, secretary of Bangla Academy told Dhaka Tribune the changes have been made to keep the gregorian calendar and Bangla calendar in synchronization.

From now on, the first six months of Bangla year will have 31 days, and the last six months of the year will have a length of 30 days, except for the month Falgun.

“Falgun will have a length of 29 days and in leap years it will have a length of 30 days,” said Hossain.

The old Bangla calender had 31 days in the first five months of the year and 30 days in the rest of the seven months.

Bangla Academy made the changes to match it with the Gregorian calendar.

“It is also scientific,” said Hossain.

The sun revolves around the sun in 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 47 seconds. In leap years, it is 366 days. The calendar which has been redesigned will have 366 days every four year, said Hossain.

Hossain said in some years Bangladesh observes the International Mother Language Day (February 21) on the 8th of Bangla month Falgun and some years the day is observed on 9th of Falgun.

This new Bangla calendar will not have that conflict anymore. The International Mother Language Day is going to be observed on 8th Falgun every year from now on, he said.

In 2015, a committee headed by the former director general of Bangla Academy Shamsuzzaman Khan, with three members – Professor Ajay Roy, Jamil Chowdhury, and Ali Asgar made the recommendation to make changes to the old Bangla calender.

However, not everybody thinks revising Bangla calendar is a good move.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Soumitra Sekhar Dey, professor of Bangla department of Dhaka University, called it absolutely unnecessary.

“Every calendar has some unique characteristics and there is no need to make changes,” said Soumitra.

Terming the changes a product of “colonial mindset,” he said Gregorian calendar does not change to match with other calendars.

It is also kind of divisive as Bangladesh and West Bengal will celebrate significant days like Rabindranath Tagore’s birthday on different days, he said.

“For instance, the Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar and therefore it cannot be synced with the Christian calendar. Then what is the necessity of changing our Bangla calender,” he questioned.

Bangla calendar is losing its essence and uniqueness every time Bangla Academy revises it, he said.

A day start with sunrise, as per the Bangla calendar, not at 12am, said Shekhar, adding it was changed to 12am in the 80s.

The Bangla calendar does not have to be revised to keep pace with the Greogorian calendar.

He said the first compilation on International Mother Language came out as “Ekushey February,” not as 8th Falgun.

“There is no conflict. Gregorian calendar can run on its own way and our calendar does not need to be matched with that,” he said.

Bangla calendar was introduced during Mughal emperor Akbar’s era and designed for harvesting crops.
