To build a clean Bangladesh, Unilever Bangladesh will provide toilet cleaning supplies to 200 government primary schools for a year.
Unilever Bangladesh made the announcement of this initiative at a program observing "World Toilet Day 2019" at Police Staff College in Dhaka's Mirpur on Tuesday.
At the event, the company displayed the name of its newly introduced toilet cleaner in Bangladesh, "Domex," made with 13,774 sachets of the product.
Claiming that this was a record, Unilever said they will soon apply to The Guinness Book of World Records for recognition.
Among others, Unilever Bangladesh Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Kedar Lele, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam, Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) Chief Engineer Saifur Rahman, and Water Aid Bangladesh Acting Country Director Imrul Kayes Muniruzzaman, spoke at the event.
LGRD Minister Tajul Islam said: "This project will make people aware of the benefits of the hygienic use of toilets. If a child attending school is properly educated on good hygiene then the household that he or she belongs to will also be more aware about this.
"Teachers have to play a big role in this regard."
Echoing the same, Unilever's Kedar Lele said: "About 20 million children do not use sanitary latrines. It is a shame for us that people are still suffering from various diseases because of poor sanitation.
"Most schools here have well built toilets but they are not hygienic. The government is working on this issue and we want to partner with them."
Reckitt Benckiser's Harpic is the most used toilet cleaning product in Bangladesh.
Emphasizing waste management, Imrul Kayes Muniruzzaman, said: “It is important to keep the environment clean. Unilever Bangladesh should engage itself with waste management.
DPHE Chief Engineer Saifur Rahman followed with: "Separate toilets and wash blocks for male and female students have been built at 34,000 government primary schools.
"By 2025, all government primary schools, all 65,000 of them, will have the above facilities."
