The knockout rounds will be held on Saturday from 9am. Participants who are relatively new in debating will compete for the Novice trophy. High school debaters will compete for the IUB Ascension high school trophy, and all the teams of the tournament are competing for the trophy of IUB Ascension 2019.
Debate workshop by Mubarrat Wassey
As part of debate activities at this year's IUB Ascension, there will be a debate training workshop by Mubarrat Wassey on the British Parliamentary (BP) format - four teams, with two members each, competes in each round - on Wednesday at 10am.
Mubarrat is one of the Chief Adjudicators (CA) of IUB Ascension 2019. He will also serve as the deputy chief adjudicator (DCA) of World University Debating Championship (WUDC) 2021, to be held in South Korea. BP is the format used in the WUDC and University debating tournaments.
Regarding the challenges of BP debating. Mubarrat told Dhaka Tribune: "It is a very dynamic form of debating as four teams compete for the top rank. Each of the four sides have to present the best version of the motion according to the position they are debating from. So with four cases coming into the debate no team has complete control over the entire debate."
Mubarrat previously served in the CA panel for IUB Ascension in 2017. Regarding his previous experience with the event, Mubarrat said: "It was a great experience. The organizers are showing to the world that Bangladeshis can also organize an international- standard debating tournament. Hence, they bring so many teams from around the world. They are showing Bangladesh to the international debating fraternity."
With just three weeks left before WUDC 2020, which will be held in Thailand, this workshop and IUB Ascension will also serve as preparation in BP debates for Bangladeshi teams.
