Coronavirus: Bangladesh shuts down land ports for foreigners

The order came into effect from zero hours of Sunday and will remain effective till further notice

Amid rising fears of a coronavirus outbreak, Bangladesh has shut down all of its land ports from the entry of foreigners.

The ports are: Benapole, Bhomra, Banglabandha, Hili, Burimari, Roumari, Darshana, Tamabil, Shaola, Akhaura, and Nakugaon, according to a circular of the Home Ministry issued on Saturday.

The order came into effect from zero hours of Sunday and will remain effective till further notice, it said. 

The government took the initiative as part of precautionary efforts to stem the outbreak of coronavirus in the country, the circular added.

Till today, Bangladesh has recorded two deaths and 24 infections from Covid-19, a pandemic announced by the World Health Organization.

More than 13,000 people have died and over 300,000 infected due to the pandemic across the world, according to Worldometer.
