India has handed over the second tranche of emergency medical supplies to Bangladesh under the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) Covid-19 Emergency Fund to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Riva Ganguly Das, handed over the emergency medical supplies to the concerned authorities of the Bangladesh government on Sunday.

A press release was issued by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka in this regard.

The medical supplies include 1,000,000 Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) medicine tablets and 50,000 sterile surgical latex gloves, said the press release.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque appreciated India’s continued support to Bangladesh.

“The helping hands of our neighbour at this time of distress are most welcome,” he said.

Das reiterated India’s continued support for the people of Bangladesh in its fight against Covid-19.

The assistance, intended to support the efforts of the Bangladesh government in tackling the spread of coronavirus, comes from the Saarc Covid-19 Emergency Fund.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Saarc Covid-19 Emergency Fund with an initial contribution of $10 million from his country.

Earlier on March 25, the first tranche of emergency medical assistance under this fund, 30,000 surgical masks and 15,000 head covers, were handed over to Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen.

As of Sunday, Bangladesh confirmed 5,416 coronavirus cases with the death toll rising to 145 after five new fatalities were reported.

The fast spreading Covid-19 has so far killed 203,000 people in more than 200 countries and territories.
