Hours after submitting his resignation, Bidyanondo Foundation founder and Chairman Kishor Kumar Das has backtracked from his decision and will continue to serve as the foundation’s chairman

He had submitted his resignation from the post on Tuesday, allegedly due to propaganda against the organization.

But later in the evening, he told Dhaka Tribune that he had changed his decision.

“I decided to resign following personal attacks against me on social media, due to my religious affiliations. But later I realized that it would negatively impact the foundation’s campaign and activities,” he added.

Insiders in the organization claimed that they had faced criticism from a quarter of religious groups, who said Bidyanondo is a Hindu name and its founder is also Hindu.

“I never wanted this post, because it is not necessary for me to continue the work we do,” Kishor told Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday night. “But considering the current situation, I have decided to remain in the post of chairman in this foundation.”

He said he would decide later on his next course of action.

Earlier in the day, Salman Khan Yasin, branch manager of Dhaka Division in Bidyanondo, told Dhaka Tribune that Kishor had tendered his resignation citing his inability to continue his work due to personal attacks on social media, and had expressed his interest in working as the foundation’s organizational secretary.

However, the executive committee of Bidyanondo did not accept Kishor’s resignation.

For the last two years, activists of the organization have been subjected to attacks on social media based on its name and the founder’s religious affiliations, insiders said.

Currently, the foundation is providing for underprivileged people by giving them food from donations it receives amid the Covid-19 lockdown.

During Ramadan every year, Bidyanondo serves iftar and sehri items to thousands of underprivileged people.

Meal boxes containing rice, chicken, fish, and vegetables are provided to street children, beggars, elderly people and people with physical and mental disabilities living in the streets.

“We prepare food keeping people of all religious faiths in mind, where our volunteers cook with their own hands,” Salman added.

Earlier during a conversation with Dhaka Tribune a year ago, Bidyanondo founder Kishor said he dreamed of a world where no child would suffer and no one would go to sleep with an empty stomach.

Since 2013, the organization has been widely praised on social media in Bangladesh for their work for the betterment of underprivileged children, fighting against hunger and social taboos.
