Police had to fire water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesting workers in Savar
Workers of several garment factories in Savar, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Chittagong staged demonstrations on Thursday for full payment of their salaries and dues before Eid-ul-Fitr.
Protests in Savar on Thursday turned violent as allegations of vandalism rose against the agitating workers, resulting in police firing water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse the workers.
Workers of Medlar Apparels Ltd and Adiyat Apparels Ltd demonstrated on Thursday morning for payment of full wages, other arrears and reopening the factories.
During the demonstration, workers of Medlar Apparels Ltd vandalized the factory, witnesses said.
At one point police had to use water cannons when the workers refused to withdraw their protests. Police also fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesting workers.
Dhaka-1 industrial police ASP Jaane Alam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
Witnesses and police said the factory management were delaying disbursement of the workers' April wages, which escalated on Thursday morning.
The workers of Adiyat Apparels continued to protest for the second consecutive day on Thursday, demanding a reopening of the factory whose production remained suspended and 300 workers stood laid-off.
Meanwhile in Chittagong, the agitating workers of Four H Lingerie Ltd, a subsidiary of Four Group located at Baluchhara area under Hathazari police station, put up a blockade for several hours on Chittagong-Rangamati highway on Thursday, demanding payment of hundred per cent wage for April.
On information, members of the Industrial Police and Hathazari police station rushed to the spot and tried to calm the agitating workers.
Masud Alam, officer-in-charge of Hathazari police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that the workers agitated for hundred per cent wage.
“The workers took to the street as factory authorities wanted to pay 60 per cent of their wages for April,” said the OC.
Protests continue in Gazipur
Workers of several apparel factories on Thursday demanded bonuses and fall wages before Eid-ul-Fitr.
Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tongi Purba Thana and Islam Hossain, inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police, said workers of Patriot Apparels staged demonstration in front of their factory in Tongi BSCIC area, demanding payment of full wages and bonuses before Eid.
They said similar protests also took place in Tongi railway station and its surrounding areas.
At one point workers gathered to block Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for several hours.
Later police arrived at the spot to pacify the agitated workers.
Workers stage demo in Narayanganj
Hundreds of workers of a garment factory in Narayanganj's Fatullah upazila staged demonstrations on Thursday in front of their factories demanding pending salaries before Eid-ul-Fitr.
Workers of HR Fashion gathered in front of their factory demanding payment of due salaries.
They alleged that the factory management promised to pay their wages for March and April on multiple occasions, but failed to deliver every time.
Md Sohel, the owner of HR Fashion, said he was trying his best to pay all the due wages of the workers before Eid.
