The Ministry of Education will provide over 1.2 million poor and underprivileged students with stipends before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The ministry will disburse the money to a total of 1,259,100 students via Strengthening Public Financial Management for Social Protection (SPFMSP) project, Agrani Bank, and bKash, and Bangladesh Bank.
The central bank will also oversee the whole process.
The Ministry of Education has already sent Tk236.93 crore to Bangladesh Bank to be distributed among the students across the country.
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni inaugurated the financial assistance program in an event held at Dhaka’s International Mother Language Institute on Wednesday.
The money will be disbursed through the GTP (government to person) system to eradicate the involvement of any third party.
Bangladesh Bank is all set to disburse the money to the accounts of the underprivileged students of the country by Wednesday.
The minister said: "We are going through a serious crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic. The government is trying its best to help people during this difficult time and this stipend program will play an important role in this regard.
“Another 1.2 million poor students will get their stipends next month.”
