The founding Chairman of the Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology, Md Imamul Kabir Shanto, has died of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus.
He breathed his last at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka at 7am on Saturday, confirmed Lily Islam, a public relations officer of the university.
Imamul Kabir, also a freedom fighter, was also the founding chairman of several organizations, including Shanto-Mariam Foundation, and Sundarban Courier Service (Pvt) Ltd.
Meanwhile, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq expressed condolence at the demise of Imamul Kabir Shanto.
In his condolence message, the minister said: "Imamul Kabir Shanto was a heroic freedom fighter, a successful entrepreneur, educationist, and a long time friend of mine.
"The death of a personality like him is an irreparable loss for the nation. His contribution to the spread of higher education and the great War of Liberation will be forever remembered," he added.
Covid-19, a pandemic announced by the World Health Organization (WHO), has claimed 610 lives and infected 44,608 people in the country as of Saturday.
