Police have arrested as many as 52 individuals, suspected to be human traffickers who were responsible for trafficking 26 Bangladeshis who were killed in Libya in May, across Bangladesh.
They were arrested in 26 cases filed across the country, said a statement issued by the Police Headquarters.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Detective Branch (DB), and several other units of police arrested them during different drives.
Earlier, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed said all human traffickers would face the full force of the law.
Upon the IGP’s direction, concerned units have been active at the field level, taking legal action against people involved in human trafficking, said the statement signed by AIG (media) Sohel Rana.
The CID is investigating 12 of the cases filed in this connection across the country.
On May 28, 38 Bangladeshis and several people of African origin were held hostage by human traffickers in Libya.
All the victims were trafficked to the war-torn African state on their way to Europe.
Even though they were paid up to $10,000 by each of the hostages, the traffickers had demanded a large amount of money again.
At one stage, the traffickers fired shots, killing 26 Bangladeshis and two others in the process.
Soon after the gruesome incident, Bangladeshi law enforcement agencies launched coordinated drives against human trafficking rings across the country.
