Journalist Shariful Alam Chowdhury, also the general secretary of Comilla’s Muradnagar Press Club, his father, and mother have been hacked in their own house by the local UP chairman’s men.
The incident occurred in Kaziatal village under Darora union of Muradnagar upazila on Saturday.
Police have arrested Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Shahjahan Mia and a case has been filed against seven people, including the chairman, over this incident.
Shahjahan was sent to jail after he was produced before the court of chief judicial magistrate in Comilla on Sunday, confirmed Muradnagar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Manzur Alam.
Shariful’s father, freedom fighter Abdul Matin Chowdhury, said: “My son published news of corruption, irregularities and nepotism against Darora UP Chairman Shahjahan. The chairman and his supporters got furious and threatened to kill him.
“They filed several false charges against Sharif. Feeling insecure, he left home for a month and came back last week. On information of Sharif returning back home, Chairman Shahjahan’s men broke into our house on Saturday, dragged him to the yard and hacked him.
"As Sharif’s mother and I went to rescue him, they hacked us too. Even after hearing our shouts, no one dared to come forward for fear of the chairman's men,” he added.
Sharif was rushed to Muradnagar Upazila Health Complex and as his condition was critical, the on-duty doctors referred him to Comilla Medical College Hospital. His parents are undergoing treatment at the Muradnagar hospital.
Sharif’s sister, Sultana Chowdhury Munni, said the chairman’s men tried to sexually harass her but she managed to flee and save herself.
Muradnagar police station OC Manzur said: "I called an ambulance and sent journalist Sharif to the hospital.
“Meanwhile, Chairman Shahjahan was arrested and brought to the police station. Sharif’s father filed a case as a plaintiff. The operation to nab the other accused is ongoing,” he added.
