A Bangladesh Navy official who was seriously injured in an explosion in the Lebanese capital Beirut is now out of critical physical condition.

Of the 21 people injured in Tuesday’s blast, 11 were released from the hospital, said a release issued on Thursday in Dhaka.

The horrific explosion at a warehouse in the port of Beirut on August 4 injured 21 members of the Bangladesh Navy Ship (BNS) “Bijoy,” which is part of the UN peacekeeping operation Maritime Task Force.

One of the injured officials was in critical condition and was admitted to the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC).

The others were rushed to the Hamud Hospital after initial treatment under the supervision of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The Navy Headquarters is in constant touch with the BNS Bijoy, UNIFIL Headquarters and Bangladesh Embassy in Beirut in this regard, added the release.

The UNIFIL head of mission and the force commander and the maritime task force commander are closely monitoring the overall situation and cooperating fully.

Right after the incident, Bangladesh Ambassador to Beirut Major General Jahangir Al Mostahidur Rahman visited BNS Bijoy and provided all necessary assistance for the transfer of the injured to the hospital and for the provision of appropriate treatment, said the release.

Bangladesh Navy warships have been participating in the UN peacekeeping missions in Lebanon since 2010.

As a member of the Multinational Maritime Task Force in the Mediterranean, the BNS Bijoy is currently engaged in establishing world peace.

The ship has been working efficiently to prevent illegal weapons and ammunition from entering Lebanese territory, added the release.

The ship is also conducting maritime interdiction operations in the Lebanese water margin, surveillance of suspicious ships and aircraft, rescue operations on wrecked ships, and providing necessary training to the Lebanese Navy.

As many as four Bangladeshi nationals were killed and around 100 more, including the 21 members of Bangladesh Navy, were injured in the two massive explosions that rocked the port of Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Mehedi Hasan and Rasel Miah from Brahmanbaria, Mizan from Madaripur, and Rezaul from Comilla, confirmed Abdullah Al Mamun, first secretary (labour) and head of the chancery at Bangladesh Embassy in Beirut.
