Court sets August 26 for the hearing of charge framing against Mojnu in the case

A tribunal in Dhaka has accepted the charge sheet against Md Mojnu, the lone accused in a case of the rape of a Dhaka University student in the city's Kurmitola area.

Judge Begum Mosammat Quamrunnahar of the Seventh Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children Repression took the charge sheet into cognizance on Sunday in presence of the accused.

The tribunal also set August 26 for the hearing of charge framing against Mojnu in the case.

On March 16, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) submitted the charge sheet before a court in Dhaka against the lone accused.

Earlier, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Forensic Unit head Sheikh Nazmul Alam confirmed that a DNA test with samples from the girl and Mojnu, 30, revealed the latter's involvement in the crime.

On January 5, a second year student of DU was raped in Kurmitola after she mistakenly got off a bus there around 7pm on her way to a friend's house at Joar Sahara, also known as Shewra.

The incident caused shockwaves and triggered massive protests by students and humanitarian organizations across the country.

The rape survivor's father filed a case with Cantonment police station over the incident, which was transferred to the DB police on January 6.

On January 8, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Mojnu in the capital's Shewra rail crossing area.

On January 16, Mojnu gave a statement before a Dhaka court confessing his involvement in the crime.
