The law minister said if Sheikh Hasina had not become prime minister in 1996, the trial of Bangabandhu killing would not be possible
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq has said from the chronology of events following the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members, it was evident that Ziaur Rahman perpetrated the heinous crime.
“Ziaur Rahman was involved with the killing. He became chief of army staff within seven days of Bangabandhu murder, deputy chief martial law administrator after three months and became president and chief martial law administrator after six months,” he said.
The law minister stated these while addressing a virtual discussion organized by the United Kingdom chapter of Awami League as chief discussant marking the National Mourning Day and 45th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on Saturday evening, an official release said.

“Ziaur Rahman made Razakars like Shah Azizur Rahman prime minister and Shamsul Haque the foreign minister to hurt the sentiment of Freedom Fighters. He made another Razakar Abdul Alim minister. Khaleda Zia too made war criminals like Nizami and Mojaheed ministers. The main objective of doing these was to completely destroy Sonar Bangladesh as dreamt by Bangabandhu,” Anisul Huq added.
The law minister further said if Sheikh Hasina had not become prime minister in 1996, the trial of Bangabandhu killing would not be possible.
“This trial would not have completed if Sheikh Hasina had not become prime minister in 2009. The trial of war crimes and crimes against humanity would not be possible and the development that took place in the country in the last one decade would not be possible,” he said.
Presided over by United Kingdom Awami League President Sultan Mahmud Sharif and conducted by its General Secretary Syed Sajidur Rahman Faruk, the virtual discussion was further addressed by Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Awami League presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Deputy Minister for education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, among others.
