Prisoner held after escape from Mitford Hospital

An undertrial prisoner has been apprehended in Dhaka hours after he escaped from the capital's Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital while undergoing treatment there.

Mintu Hossain, 28, who fled the hospital in the early hours of Saturday, was detained in the Babubazar area in the afternoon, confirmed Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman.

"The prison authorities cornered him and later informed us about the matter," he said.

After the incident of escape, the jail authorities filed a case at Kotwali police station.

Mitford Hospital Director Brig Gen Kazi Md Rashid Un Nabi said the jail authorities admitted Mintu to the hospital with respiratory disease around 7:30pm on Friday, and since then he was undergoing treatment under the custody of the jail guards.

"We have heard the inmate escaped around 4:30am," he added.

Later in the evening, Mahbub Hossain, jailor pf Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, told Dhaka Tribune that three of their guards -- who were posted in the hospital to keep the prisoners in check -- were suspended.

Minut was taken back to the prison in the afternoon after he was caught. 

Prison Headquarters sources said Mintu is an accused in a drug case filed at Gopalpur police station in Tangail.

He landed in Tangail District Jail on August 13 and later was transferred to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj for treatment. 

On Friday evening, he was sent to Mitford Hospital where jail guards Kamrul Islam and Abdul Alim were on duty from 10pm on Friday to 6am on Saturday.

The jail authorities are conducting an investigation over the incident.

Earlier on August 6, another prisoner Abu Bakar Siddique, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, escaped from Kashimpur Central Jail 2 in Gazipur and could not be traced yet.
