Registration will have to be completed within 20 working days
The Ministry of Information has initially cleared the online portals of 92 newspapers for registration, including Dhaka Tribune.
The matter was disclosed by the ministry on Thursday in a circular signed by Deputy Secretary Nasrin Parvin.
According to the circular, the ministry has initially allowed the online portals of 92 newspapers to register as part of the ongoing process.
The registration needs to be completed within 20 working days by submitting the required fee and following government rules.
Among the permitted newspapers to register, 57 are in Dhaka, 10 in Chittagong, seven in Sylhet, four each in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, and two in Mymensingh.
On July 30, 34 online news portals were given this approval.
On the same day, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud had said: “Online news portals, against which the government agencies found no objection, will initially be allowed to get registered. A list of such portals will be released tonight [July 30],” he said.
He said the government was set to release a list of online media outlets following a "rigorous verification process."
