Reasons behind criminal activities in border areas must be found, outgoing Indian envoy says
The border areas between Bangladesh and India are prone to criminal activities and smuggling, which need to be stopped, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das has said.
“A lot of criminal activities have been taking place in the border regions… (border) deaths are happening well within Indian territory... the reasons why so many criminal activities, smuggling, are happening in the border areas must be found, and they must be stopped,” she said during her visit to Naogaon’s Atrai upazila on Tuesday.
Officials from both India and Bangladesh should come forward to find out the reasons and act accordingly, she added while answering a question from journalists after an event on Tuesday.
The outgoing Indian envoy visited the Gandhi Ashram and Rabindra Kachari Bari in Naogaon on Tuesday, accompanied by Sanjib Kumar Bhati, assistant high commissioner of India in Rajshahi, Uttam Kumar Roy, additional deputy commissioner, and Moslem Uddin, officer-in-charge of Atrai police station.
Riva Ganguly Das explained how non-sectarian liberalism could help in building communal harmony between the two countries.
She also mentioned the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore to the growth of non-communal and liberal principles in this regard.
