Four Bangladeshi workers have been killed and dozens of others injured in a road accident in Mauritius.

The incident took place in the Pail area near Port Louise on Thursday morning.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to Mauritius Rezina Ahmed confirmed the matter and said they would ensure compensation for the deceased workers.

“We have already discussed the matter with the labor minister and the company high officials of Mauritius. They said they would ensure compensation for the deceased workers,” she said.

The bus containing the four Bangladeshis had 50 Bangladeshi passengers onboard when the accident occurred. Three of the Bangladeshis died on the spot and the fourth died in a hospital later.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Another 8 are currently receiving treatment at a government hospital in Mauritius. One of them is in a critical condition.

All of them were workers of a construction company, Hybec Partner. The accident occurred when they were going to work in the morning around 7:30am.

The driver of the bus lost control and crashed into a bus terminal.

Responding to a question about the bodies of the deceased, the high commissioner said: “The bodies are currently in a morgue. Because of flight restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic flights are quite irregular, but we will still try to send their bodies to their loved ones within a very short time.”

Regarding the incident, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said: “The deaths and the entire incident is extremely sad. The government will make sure all who were affected by the incident get the necessary support.”
