Different socio-cultural and political organizations of the port city yesterday paid rich tributes to the legendary hero Shurjo Sen on the occasion of his 87th execution day.
People paid rich tributes to the great revolutionary by placing floral wreaths on his portrait and on the execution platform at Chittagong Central Jail.
Officials of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) paid homage at the bust of the revolutionary at the JM Sen Hall in the city.
Besides, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Socialist Party of Bangladesh, Chhatra Union, Jubo Union, Chhatra Front, Chattogram Biplob and Biplobi Smriti Sangrakshan Parishad, Chittagong Association, Shurjo Sen Smriti Pathagar, Shahid Asad Smriti Sangshad and other organizations paid homage through floral wreaths in remembrance of the celebrated revolutionary.
Additionally, different organizations paid homage at the bust of Shurjo Sen at Shurjo Sen Smriti Pathagar in Raozan, Chittagong, which is also the birthplace of the great hero.
Born on March 22, 1894 in Raozan, Shurjo Sen fought to free India from British colonial rule.
It was Masterda Shurjo Sen who spearheaded the Chittagong Jubo Bidraha or Chittagong Youth Revolt.
An ideological mentor to revolutionary youths, Shurjo Sen, better known as ‘Masterda’, conducted a number of daring raids against the colonial government in Chittagong. On April 18, 1930, he along with his comrades raided the armoury of the police, looting weapons and putting up resistance at Jalalabad Hills in Chittagong.
Shurjo Sen was the first revolutionary to isolate Chittagong from the rest of the British Raj. Masterda was the first man who hoisted the national flag in Chittagong. Eventually, the great hero was arrested and after a summary trial and torture in imprisonment, Masterda Shurjo Sen was executed at Chittagong Central Jail on January 12, 1934.
