The accused, who was arrested in Thakurgaon, used to work as a domestic help for an elderly woman in Dhaka’s Malibagh

Police have arrested a woman for allegedly torturing her elderly employer and stealing cash and other valuables from the latter’s house.

The incident took place earlier this month, and the accused, identified as Rekha, was arrested on Wednesday night, police said.

Police also recovered Tk60,000 in cash, gold jewellery, and mobile phones from her possession.

Rekha, who is a native of Palashbari village under Baliadangi upazila in Thakurgaon, started working as a domestic help at the house of Mehbuba Jahan Bulbuli in Malibagh, Dhaka, a year ago.

On January 8 this year, she left the house all of a sudden, and returned on January 17.

On January 19, when no one else was at home, Rekha allegedly tortured Bilkis Begum, Bulbuli’s elderly mother, and stole cash, gold jewellery, and other valuables.

A case was filed with Shahjahanpur police station in Dhaka in this regard.

According to police and family sources, after stealing the valuables, Rekha fled Dhaka and went back to Thakurgaon.

Searching for Rekha, police detained her sister in Dhaka, and using information retrieved from her, they traced Rekha to her uncle Kofiluddin's house in Chikanmati village Kashimari union in the district.

At around 2:30am on Wednesday, a team from Shahjahanpur police station, led by Sub-Inspector Rezaul Karim, investigation officer of the case, arrested her from her uncle’s house, with the help of local police.

“Rekha first took refuge in Demra after fleeing, then she went to her uncle's house in Thakurgaon for a safer shelter,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Tofazzal Hossain in Thakurgaon.

“She was later arrested from Chikanmati village in Kashipur union bordering Ranishankail and Baliadangi police stations,” he added.

Police said she had stolen more money than recovered from her possession, and had likely spent more than Tk1 lakh of the stolen money.

Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police (SP) Jahangir Alam said: “Police conducted a special operation after receiving a message from Dhaka after the incident. A police team from Dhaka arrested her with our help, using special technology.”

He further said Rekha would be transported to Dhaka, where she would be produced in court.

Not only the police, but the Rapid Action Battalion and Police Bureau of Investigation  also joined in the search for Rekha, said PBI ASP Rezaul Islam in Thakurgaon.

Abul Hossain, a local of Palashbari village, said they were furious to learn that Rekha had committed such a crime.

“We want proper punishment for the criminal, even though she is from our village.”
