Covid-19: Daily test positivity rate rises above 3% again in Bangladesh

Seven more die, 366 new cases in 24 hours

The daily test positivity rate for Covid-19 in Bangladesh has jumped above 3% in the last 24 hours until Monday morning.

The latest daily infection rate rose to 3.30% while it went below the 3% mark on Sunday and stood at 2.33%.

Until Friday, the test positivity rate remained below 3% for four consecutive days, before it jumped to 3.14% on Saturday.

On February 15, the infection rate rose to 3.15%, after remaining below the mark for 10 days straight. 

The daily test positivity in the country has been in single digits since December 19.

A total of 366 new infections were reported from 11,103 samples tested in the last 24 hours.

With the latest infections, the number of all confirmed cases jumped to 543,717, according to the daily virus update by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), released on Monday afternoon.

A total of 11,051 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the past 24 hours for testing at 214 authorized labs across the country.

The overall infection rate in the country stands at 13.73% from 3,958,776 tests that have been conducted, so far.

Meanwhile, the country registered seven more deaths from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, taking the number of total fatalities to 8,356.

Of the deceased – four men and three women – five were from Dhaka division, and one each from Rajshahi and Barisal divisions.

All the victims died at hospitals.

So far, 6,325 men (75.70%) and 2,031 women (24.30%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected in the country stands at 1.54%.

The DGHS said 692 people have recovered from Covid-19 over the last 24 hours.

So far, 492,059 patients — 90.50% of all infected — have made full recoveries across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain named Sars-CoV-2.z

The country recorded the first fatality due to the deadly virus on March 18.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December of 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus claimed 2,479,090 lives and infected 112,012,014 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.

As many as 87,379,270 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
