'But if they are found involved after the investigation, legal action will be taken against them for sure,' says Benazir Ahmed

The inspector general of police (IGP) has said that the top Hefazat-e-Islam leaders have not been accused in any of the cases filed over recent mayhem because they were not seen on the spots of the clashes.

"But if they are found involved after the investigation, legal action will be taken against them for sure," Benazir Ahmed told reporters at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on Tuesday.

He also said: "Action will be taken against the instigators. The attacks stained the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's Independence."

As many as 14,000 people have been accused in numerous cases filed over the series of violent protests by Hefazat in several districts from Friday to Sunday.

However, no top Hefazat leaders were named in any of the cases.

The religious fundamentalist group's top leaders are believed to have instigated the vandalism, attacks, and arson attacks that took place during the violent protests, but only some small local leaders and supporters have been named in a few cases filed in Narayanganj and Dhaka.

Last Friday, a group of Hefazat hardliners clashed with the police during protests against Indian Prime Minister Modi’s visit outside the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka.

The same day, the Islamist group called a daylong general strike across the country for Sunday, protesting against the deaths of its members during clashes.

More clashes soon spread like wildfire across the country, leaving hundreds of people injured and many dead. There was also significant damage to government and private property.

A total of 14 Hefazat men – 10 in Brahmanbaria and four in Chittagong – have died in the clashes with law enforcement personnel since Friday.
