The government has capped prices of six essential commodities ahead of the month of Ramadan and a strict lockdown from Wednesday.
Onions will be sold at Tk40 per kg, sugar at Tk67 per kg, and soybean oil at Tk139 per litre, grams at Tk63-67 per kg, coarse-grained mushoor lentil at Tk67-69 per kg, and fine-grained lentil at Tk97-103, according to the prices fixed by the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM).
Also, low-quality dates will cost about Tk80-100 per kg and medium quality dates cannot cost more than Tk200-250.
DAM Director General Mohammad Yusuf announced the prices at a media call on Monday, read media reports.
The move comes a day after Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan called businesses to keep the prices of essential commodities stable during the Ramadan as the people's incomes have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The National Moon Sighting Committee will meet on Tuesday to ascertain the commencement of Ramadan.
Bangladesh is also set to go into strict lockdown from Wednesday to curb the alarming surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths.
