He was killed in a dispute allegedly over the slaughter of a goat
A fish farmer has been allegedly beaten to death by some local residents over the slaughter of a goat in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur district, police said on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Azizur Rahman, 33, from the Royen village in the upazila.
AKM Mizanul Haque, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, said a goat, owned by Mostaque Khan, damaged crops on Azizur's agricultural land on Tuesday.
"An angry Azizur subsequently slaughtered the goat and ate its meat," the OC added.
The following day, Mostaque along with his associates caught Azizur and thrashed him. "They also hit him with a sharp weapon that left him critically injured," the officer said.
Azizur succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital around 10:30pm on Wednesday.
An FIR has been registered on the basis of a complaint by the victim's wife, Asma Khatun, at Kaliganj Police Station.
"We are trying to arrest the accused," the OC said.
