The hardline Islamist leader is arrested on charges of inciting violence
Hefazat-e-Islam Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque has been arrested from a madrasa in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur where he teaches.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner (Detective Branch) Mahbub Alam confirmed the arrest to the Dhaka Tribune.
A joint team of police and detectives raided Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa yesterday and arrested the Hefazat leader, who has been in the limelight for several months for mobilizing violent movements demanding removal of Bangabandhu’s sculpture and protesting against the arrival of the Indian prime minister.
DB officials said that they had surrounded the madrasa at around 12:30pm. Teachers and students at the madrasa initially tried to obstruct them during the raid.
Also acting secretary general of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Mamunul was picked up from a room on the first floor of the madrasa. He was then taken to the DB office at Mintoo Road for questioning.
At a media call immediately after the arrest, DMP Deputy Commissioner (DC) Harun-or-Rashid said: “Mamunul has been arrested in connection with a case filed with Mohammadpur police station over vandalism in 2020. We have found evidence that confirms his involvement in the incident. He has also confessed to his crimes.”
The official added that Mamunul had been under our scanner following the recent protests by Hefazat men across the country. “He influenced his followers, who attacked, vandalized police stations, police outposts, and other government and private establishments.”
Asked whether the police would seek his remand, DC Harun said: “We will first consult the matter with our senior officers and then take all legal measures.”
There are multiple cases filed against Mamunul. “He will be shown arrested in all of them. He will be taken to the court on Monday [today]. Till then, Mamunul will be kept in a police station,” the DC added, without giving any further details.
DB Joint Commissioner Mahbub, however, told the media that Mamunul had been arrested in a different case filed on April 6 against him and 16 others with Paltan model police station.
This case was filed by a businessman from Wari Khandaker Arif-uz-Zaman, also the deputy office secretary of Dhaka South Jubo League, for the violence that took place near Baitul Mukarram National Mosque during Hefazat's demonstrations on March 26.
According to police sources, Mamunul was staying at the madrasa since the resort incident and was under police scanner.
DB officials said that Mamunul was also named in a number of cases filed over the Hefazat mayhem in the capital on May 5, 2013.

Meanwhile, Khelafat Majlis in a statement yesterday demanded immediate release of Mamunul, the son of the party’s founder Shaikhul Hadith Allama Azizul Haque.
Mamunul was behind the scene since April 3 after he had been surrounded by locals and ruling party supporters with a woman, whom he identified as his second wife, at Royal Resort in Sonargaon on April 3.
Officials of the local administration and the police went to the resort upon hearing about the incident, and sat with Mamunul to learn about the incident. Later a group of stick-wielding Hefazat supporters launched an attack on the resort, vandalized it and snatched Mamunul from the police.
