Heatwave likely to continue in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has said a heatwave is sweeping over different regions of the country and predicted it is likely to continue.

However, rain or thundershowers may occur at some places on Thursday evening, BMD said in a forecast for the next 24 hours commencing at 6pm on Wednesday.

Meteorologist Abdul Mannan said: “The temperature could remain the same till Wednesday. There may be thunderstorms in some areas on Thursday evening. This may reduce the temperature in some areas.”

On Wednesday, the highest temperature was recorded in Jessore – 39.8°C. 

Dhaka recorded a maximum temperature of 36.5°C while Rajshahi and Khulna recorded 38.6°C and 37.8°C. Chuadanga recorded 38.6°C, Mongla recorded 37.9°C, Ishwardi recorded 38.1°C and Tangail recorded 36.5

The highest temperature recorded in the country this year was 40.3°C in Rajshahi on Tuesday, which was 40°C in Jessore on Monday.

If the mercury in the thermometer rises to 36°C to 38°C, meteorologists call it a mild heat flux. When the temperature rises to 36°C to 40°C, it is called moderate heat flow. And if the temperature exceeds 40°C, the meteorological office considers it as an intense heat wave.

According to forecast, mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions and the regions of Sitakunda, Rangamati, Noakhali, Feni, Moulvibazar, Rajshahi & Pabna and it may abate from some places.

Rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions with hails at isolated places.

Day and night temperature may fall slightly over the country.

Wednesday’s lowest temperature 22.2°C was recorded in Netrokona and Sylhet.

The sun will rise at 5:31am on Thursday and set at 6:23pm in Dhaka.
