Chandpur man reunites with family after 30 years

Separated from his family three decades ago, Masud never imagined he would be able to see them again. Thanks to a chance appearance on a YouTube program, his dream came true.

Back in 1991, Mohammad Masud, the eldest son of Bachchu Mollah from Dewanjikandi village in Chandpur’s Matlab upazila, came to Dhaka to visit his uncle in Mugdapara.

The very next day, Masud got lost after going out to the street with his cousins to play. Only five years old at that time, he could not find his way back to his uncle’s house.

Bewildered by this incident, his family tried everything possible to find their little boy — from publishing newspaper ads to conducting loudspeaker campaigns.

Nothing worked. Masud remained lost, separated from his family for 30 long years.

A man named Monir Hossain from Dhaka's Moghbazar area found Masud and took him to his house. Monir's parents Abul Kashem and Surma Begum raised Masud.

Masud grew up to become a small businessman by profession and has a mobile recharge shop in Motijheel area, Dhaka.

He is also married. He and his wife Rubina Akhter from Savar area are parents to a son and a daughter.

When even the sliver of hope for a reunion was lost, an online program named “Apon Thikana,” uploaded on the YouTube channel of RJ Kibria, rekindled the hope.

Masud took part in the 16th episode of the program, where he recalled whatever he could about his long-lost family.

The fates finally worked in his favour, as after the program was aired, Masud’s family contacted him through the content creator.

The lost son reconnected with his family, and they finally saw each other on April 23 - and it all happened at the set of the program.

On Saturday at RJ Kibria Studios, Masud's father Bachchu Mollah and mother Nazma Begum identified their missing son after seeing two scars on Masud's legs, a mole on his face and burns on his wrist.

The happy occasion brought many to tears. 

Masud's parents thanked God for finding their child. Masud's wife Rubina said her husband also thanked the Almighty for finding his family.

Mohammad Masud said he was happy to find his parents and relatives and was grateful to the Almighty.
