In a social media post commemorating the national poet’s birth anniversary, the mobile operator used Rabindranath Tagore’s photo

The family of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam will sue mobile operator Robi for defamation over using the photo of Rabindranath Tagore instead of Kazi Nazrul Islam in a social media post paying tribute on his birth anniversary.

Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s anniversary is observed worldwide on May 25.

However, Robi posted a photo on their Facebook page paying tribute to Kazi Nazrul Islam two days later and that too with a photo of Nobel Laurette Rabindranath Tagore.

Later, they removed the photo and issued an apology.

However, Nazrul’s family said they would rather take it to court and fight a legal battle against the telecom company.

Khilkhil Kazi, granddaughter of the national poet, told Dhaka Tribune that she has been talking to lawyers to file a defamation case against the telecom company so that people can take a lesson from it.

“We will be able to send them a legal notice tomorrow [Sunday] hopefully since it is the weekend and most offices are closed,” she told Dhaka Tribune.

She said this company has used Nazrul songs for their promotion and commercial before, but his family did not get a dime in royalty.

“At this moment, we are going to file a defamation case but I have a plan to take legal action against this company for using Nazrul songs without our permission and profiting from my Dadu’s song.”

“I do not think it is just a mix-up. It shows how callous and shallow they are and that they have absolutely no knowledge about our culture and literature. They should pack up their business and leave Bangladesh,” she added.

She said the organization not only humiliated Kazi Nazrul Islam and his family, but also insulted another great poet in Bangla literature Rabindranath Tagore.

Robi issued an apology on their Facebook page on Friday over the issue which also mentioned that the company has always been respectful to the art and culture of Bangladesh.
