The 50th anniversary of Peyarabagan, the first base/camp in the Liberation War of 1971, is set to be celebrated through programs on October 29.
National Committee to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Peyarabagan made the announcement through a virtual press conference on Friday.
A discussion, remembrance, and cultural program will be organized on the day of the celebration. The committee will publish various types of posters/e-posters, pamphlets, memorabilia, and documentaries in the lead up.
Speakers at the virtual press conference said politician Siraj Sikder was one of the first to identify the problems of Pakistani colonialism on the people of East Bengal (Bangladesh) in 1968.
"In 2021, we are commemorating 50 years since the Liberation War. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Peyarabagan, the first base of the Liberation War of. To mark this 50th anniversary, we have already formed the National Committee to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Peyarabagan," they added.
"After the barbaric attack and genocide by Pakistan on March 25, 1971, the first base/camp area was established at Peyarabagan in Barisal under the leadership of the working class," said Masud Khan, president of the committee.
Committee member Badal Shah Alam said: "No one was really prepared for the Liberation War; not Awami League, nor the left.”
The people of Bangladesh established a free nation after significant struggle and sacrifice in the Liberation War, the speakers said.
