2 more confess to smuggling girls to India

Another accused is sent to jail after completion of remand period

Two members of a human trafficking gang have confessed to their involvement in smuggling girls to India.

Metropolitan Magistrate Debabrata Biswas recorded the confessional statements of the duo – Mehdi Hasan Babu and Mohiuddin – on Wednesday.

Besides, the court sent another accused, Abdul Kader, to jail on completion of his five-day remand in the case.

On Tuesday, two accused — ringleader Ashraful Islam alias Ashraful Mondal alias Boss Rafi and his associate Abdur Rahman Sheikh alias Arman Sheikh — gave confessional statements in the case.

Another two accused in the case — Sahida Begum alias Madam Sahida and Ismail Sarder — were sent to jail on Tuesday as well.

Altogether nine people have been arrested over the incident.

On June 2, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the mastermind of the human trafficking racket and his three associates, including a woman, from Jhenaidah and Jessore, over the alleged rape and torture of a Bangladeshi woman by her compatriots in India.

RAB said that the gang had links to at least 50 local and international human trafficking rackets. Rafi led the racket while TikTok Hridoy, who was arrested in India and sustained bullet injuries in one of his legs, was one of his close associates.

Hridoy lured young girls through TikTok and other social media platforms by promising to provide them with jobs and later used to coax them into going to neighbouring India for work.

A girl, who managed to escape her ordeal in India after 77 days in captivity and return home, filed the case with Hatirjheel police station against 12 people on June 1.

According to the case documents, she came in contact with Hridoy alias Tiktok Hridoy in 2019 in Hatirjheel, and Hridoy had tempted her by promising to make her a TikTok star. He took the girl to different hangouts and finally smuggled her into India on February 19, 2020, promising her a good job there.
