A total of 42 teams participated in the challenge
The prize-giving ceremony of “Urban Health Innovation Challenge 2021 (UHIC 2021): Healthy, Safe and Inclusive Cities” was held on Wednesday.
Six teams were awarded token monetary prizes, crests and certificates for providing creative, low-cost, youth-led and localized solutions to address certain problems faced by adolescents and youths living in slums in their daily life.
The top three winning teams are Project Biroti (champion), Project Poribortan (first runner-up) and Team Protimoncha (second runner-up).
The team from Kalyanpur Pora Bosti “Protimancha” secured the second runner-up position in the competition while Team Friday School was announced as the fourth-best team.
Teams Juboshakti and Uttaran were jointly named the fifth-best team for this year’s Urban Health Innovation Challenge – a collaboration between Brac James P Grant School of Public Health, Brac University and Urban Program of World Vision Bangladesh.
A total of 42 teams, comprising 156 young people, with six teams from different slums of Dhaka city, and one team from the LGBTQ community, participated in the challenge, read a release issued on Thursday.
After a rigorous screening process carried out by a three-member screening committee, the top 20 teams were shortlisted.
Special consideration was made for contestants from urban slums and marginalized communities to acknowledge their interest and efforts and to promote their participation in mainstreaming innovation challenges, read a release issued on Thursday.
The UHIC 2021 focused on two urban health challenges – limited access to SRH services for adolescents and youths living in slums and increased sexual harassment among adolescents and youths living in slums.
DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh took part in the event, held at the auditorium of Brac Centre Inn, as chief guest.
Dr Md Joynal Haque, program manager (Adolescent Reproductive Health) of the MCH-Services Unit of DGFP, DSCC Chief Health Officer Brig Gen Dr Md Sharif Ahmed, and WVB National Director Suresh Bartlett were special guests at the event.
WVB Urban Program Deputy Director Monju Maria Palma, and The Centre of Excellence for Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (CGSRHR), JPGSPH, BRAC University, Assistant Director Bachera Aktar presented an overview of UHIC 2021.
