Covid-19: Bangladesh records 132 more deaths, rise in infection rate

Daily infection rate jumps to 28.27%

Daily coronavirus deaths remained over 100 for the sixth straight day on Friday with 132 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours.

The latest addition takes Bangladesh's pandemic toll so far to 14,778.

New infections jumped by 8,483 in the 24 hours to 8am on Friday, raising the total caseload to 930,042.

Bangladesh has seen a record surge in deaths and cases this week with a record high of 143 fatalities reported on Thursday and 8,882 infections — biggest single-day jump — the previous day.

Meanwhile, another 4,509 patients recovered from the infectious disease in the 24 hours till Friday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

As many as 30,012 samples, including some pending ones, were tested at 566 authorized labs in the country, which yielded an infection rate of 28.27%.

To date, 6,670,994 tests have been conducted in Bangladesh, leading to an overall test positivity rate of 13.94%.

Of the 132 deceased, 81 were men and 51 were women. Some 35 of them died in Khulna division, 30 in Dhaka, 24 each in Chittagong and Rajshahi, nine in Rangpur, six in Mymensingh and two each in Barisal and Sylhet.

As many as 119 of them died at different hospitals, while 13 died at home.

So far, 10,496 men (71.02%) and 4,282 women (28.98%) have died of Covid-19 in Bangladesh. The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected currently stands at 1.59%.

Up to this point, 825,422 patients — 88.75% of all infected — have recovered from Covid-19 across the country.

On March 8, 2020, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, turning into a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,973,565 lives and infected 183,524,941 people across the world as of Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.

As many as 168,005,515 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 222 countries and territories across the planet.
