A girl child drowned in flood water at Purba Shurjanagar village in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur district on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Lamia Begum, 8, daughter of Laal Chan Miah.

According to locals, a few days back Laal Chan’s house and an adjacent road went underwater due to heavy rain.

On Monday morning, Lamia was on the way to her aunt’s house when she and two of her classmates fell into a hole while passing through the flooded road.

Hearing their cries, locals came in and rescued them but unfortunately, Lamia died.

Basir Ahmed Badal, officer-in-charge of Nalitabari police station, said police went to visit the spot and will take legal action in this regard.

This makes two deaths in floodwater this month in Sherpur.
