India's Modi thanks PM Hasina for the gift of mangoes

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also wrote to the prime minister thanking her for the gift

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wrote to his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina, thanking her for the gift of Haribhanga mangoes she sent last week. 

In the letter, dated July 5, the Indian premier said he was “touched” by Prime Minister Hasina’s “thoughtful gesture.”

“It was a pleasant reminder of your hospitality in Dhaka extended to me during my recent visit to Bangladesh,” he said.

Modi further said despite the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the cooperation between the two countries had continued to flourish in all areas of the bilateral relationship. 

“I am glad that follow-up discussion and initiatives have taken place despite these disruptions,” the letter said. 

“I reiterate our government’s commitment to progressing our mutually beneficial cooperation,” the Indian prime minister told his Bangladesh counterpart. “Please accept, Excellency, the renewed assurances of my highest consideration.” 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sent the mangoes as presents to Modi, West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and a few other leaders in the neighbouring country.

A truck carrying 2,600kg of the Haribhanga variety of mangoes, grown in Rangpur region, crossed the border through the Benapole port in Jessore on Sunday.

Mamata has thanked Prime Minister Hasina for the gift in a letter, saying: “I respect your affection and the fragrance of Bangladesh, which came through the mangoes. I am truly impressed.”
