Bangladesh’s daily Covid deaths drop below 200 after five days

187 fatalities logged while caseload rises by 12,148

Single-day deaths from the coronavirus in Bangladesh has dropped below 200 after five days.

Health authorities reported 187 deaths in 24 hours to 8am on Friday, taking the toll to 17,465.

Dhaka counted 68 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Khulna with 39 fatalities. 

Chittagong division reported 36 deaths while Rajshahi 14, Sylhet nine, Barisal eight, Mymensingh seven, and Rangpur six.

A total of 12,148 people tested positive during the same time, taking the total number of infections to 1,083,922, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Dhaka logged 4,949 cases, the highest among the divisions followed by Chittagong with 2,330 cases, Khulna with 1,497, and Rajshahi with 1,045.

On the other hand, another 8,536 patients recovered from the infectious disease across the country, taking the total number of recovery to 914,343.

As many as 41,947 samples were tested across the country, with a positivity rate of 28.96%. The overall infection rate stands at 15.08%.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.61%.

Vaccination

In the 24 hours till Friday morning, 665 people received a second dose of Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine, taking the total to nearly 4.296 million. Meanwhile, a little over 1.524 million people received the first dose of the vaccine and are awaiting the second dose.

Additionally, 146,319 people received the first dose of Sinopharm vaccine during the same period, taking the total to 651,549 till now, while 2,259 people received the second dose till Friday. 

Meanwhile, 4,148 people were administered with the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, taking the total to 46,981. 

Also, 46,166 people received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine taking the total number to 112,571.

The health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4.08 million lives and infected nearly 190 million people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 173.252 million people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
