Bangladesh is also set to receive two million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine from China on Saturday night

US Ambassador Earl R Miller has announced that his country will send another consignment of three million doses of Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine to Bangladesh.

These vaccine doses are coming to Bangladesh as a gift from the American people via the Covax facility, he said in a tweet on Saturday.

"The US is committed to increasing the country’s vaccine supply to beat the pandemic here and worldwide," Miller said.

According to a White House official, Bangladesh is likely to receive 3.5 million Moderna doses to be specific from the United States by Monday.

"Scientific teams and legal and regulatory authorities from both countries have worked together to ensure the prompt delivery of safe and effective vaccine lots," the official said.

In the first week of July, Bangladesh received the first consignment of 2.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine under the Covax facility.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh is also set to receive two million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine from China on Saturday night as part of a commercial agreement.

The deputy chief of mission at the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka, Hualong Yan, told UNB on Friday that the vaccine doses would arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in two planes.

He said China would also give one million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine as a gift in addition to the earlier 1.1 million doses. "This is a gift for our Bangladeshi brothers and sisters in their fight against the pandemic."

Bangladesh has already received two million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine as part of a commercial purchase from China. The country is slated to receive initially 15 million doses of the vaccine as part of the commercial agreement.

Hualong Yan also said that China stands ready to provide all support and assistance to help the Bangladesh government mitigate poverty through the China-South Asian Countries Poverty Alleviation and Cooperative Development Center.

Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had said that Beijing would continue to provide Bangladesh with the Covid jabs to help Bangladesh fight the pandemic.

The Moderna vaccine doses coming from the US is part of the US government's recent allocation of 25 million vaccine doses for countries in Asia, in line with President Joe Biden's pledge to share doses of US jabs with other countries around the world via Covax or directly.

The Covax is a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines directed by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and the World Health Organization.
