Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Abu Syed passed the order on Sunday

A Dhaka court on Sunday placed a couple on a one-day remand on charges of torturing their 12-year-old house help in Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Abu Syed passed the order after Sub-Inspector (SI) Jahangir Hossain, of Shahbagh police station and also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced them before the court with a seven-day remand plea.

Defence lawyers opposed the remand prayers and submitted a petition seeking bail for the accused in the cases, but the court rejected the bail petitions.

Earlier on July 4, another Dhaka judge sent the two -- Md Tanvir Ahsan and his wife advocate Nahid Jahan Akhi -- to jail after the IO produced them before the court after showing them arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrCP).

A team of Shahbagh Police arrested the couple and rescued the victim from their house in Topkhana road on July 3.

The house help, identified as Sweety, hailed from Mithamoin upazila of Kishoreganj district.

She had been working for the accused couple for the past nine months, according to police.

“The couple used to torture the girl over trivial matters,” said police quoting the victim.

A neighbour of the couple posted a photo of the victim with several injury marks on Facebook late on Saturday.

A journalist then notified the Media and Public Relations Wing of Bangladesh Police and sought action.

Police took action after one and half hours of the Facebook post.
