Elite force seizes liquor, deerskin, walky-talkies
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) took into custody businessperson Helena Jahangir after the seizure of bottles of foreign liquor and deerskin among other stuff during a four-hour-long raid at her Gulshan residence on Friday night.
She was arrested around 12:15am on Saturday, and taken to the RAB Headquarters for interrogation.
"Walky-talkies, foreign currencies and casino equipment were seized during the search. We’ve arrested her over the seized elements and also based on some specific allegations against her," Rab Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Basu said.
RAB members raided her five-storey building at Gulshan 2 around 8:30pm.
Helena is a director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) and chairperson of Joyjatra TV.
On July 25, she lost membership of the Awami League subcommittee on women affairs for her involvement with Bangladesh Awami Chakrijibi League, an organization with no affiliation with the ruling party.
She was also removed from the advisor post of Comilla district unit Awami League.
Her organization had started seeking presidents and general secretaries for its upazila and district units, and branches abroad.
Helena was the self-proclaimed central president of the organization and one Engineer Saiful Islam Emon is said to be the central publicity secretary.
