Covid: Bangladesh records 235 more deaths, 15,776 new cases

Infection rate 28.54% in 24 hours

The health authorities in Bangladesh tallied another 235 Covid-19 deaths and 15,776 new cases on Tuesday, as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc in the country.

On the other hand, 16,297 more patients recovered from the infectious disease in the 24 hours between 8am on Monday and 8am on Tuesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest additions took the country’s death toll to 21,397, total caseload to 1,296,093 and the total number of recoveries to 1,125,045.

Dhaka counted 73 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Chittagong with 65 fatalities.

Thirty-two deaths were reported in Khulna division, 21 in Rajshahi, 12 each in Mymensingh, Rangpur and Sylhet, and eight in Barisal.

Two hundred and nineteen of them died at different hospitals across the country, one was brought in dead, while 15 died at home.

Of the new patients, Dhaka logged 7,735 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Chittagong with 3,734, Khulna with 946 and Rajshahi with 771.

As many as 55,284 samples were tested during the 24-hour period, yielding an infection rate of 28.54%.

The infection rate against all tests conducted in the country to date stands at 16.41%.

Meanwhile, the latest figures put the recovery rate at 86.80% and the mortality rate at 1.65 %.

Vaccination progress

So far, around 4.3 million people have received the second dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, while about 1.51 million have only received the first dose and are awaiting the second one.

Moreover, 210,681 people received their first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 2,684,312, while another 8,316 people received their second jab of the Chinese vaccine.

Meanwhile, another 918 people received their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine, taking the count to 3,168. As many as 50,255 people have been administered the first dose of the vaccine.

Besides, another 79,984 people received the first dose of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine, taking the total to 844,209.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4.25 million lives and infected over 199.7 million people across the world till Tuesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

More than 180 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 222 countries and territories across the planet.
